Nervos breakdown
As a professional Italian translator I understand a little Romanian and the other day saw a perfect example of how you can go so wrong so easily.
The translator was trying to say how the person had a tendency to fly off the handle often, and kept using the word nervos. Nervos in Romanian occasionally means nervous but more often is used as irritated or impatient. In English its connotations suggest timid. Which was sort of the opposite of what the interpreter was trying to say.
I don’t usually correct fellow interpreters, but in this case I thought it would save him leaving the meeting with his tail between his legs. Now how do you translate that into Romanian?
